Interstate buses under transport department scanner
Continuing its crackdown on inter-state buses for the second day running, the transport department on Friday issued challans to 18 buses in North Goa for carrying excess luggage in their luggage compartments.
Transport department sources said that on Thursday, enforcement officials of the transport department in North Goa penalized 22 buses entering Goa from Mumbai and Pune. They were all issued challans with fines of 3,000 each.Sources said that the buses are plying as stage carriages for inter-state passengers. But now they are operating as courier services by ferrying excess luggage in their holds. This is in violation of the motor vehicle rules and they have been fined accordingly. While most buses were based in Mumbai and Pune, some of the buses were based in Goa too.
Enforcement officials in South Goa on Thursday issued challans to four buses entering Goa from Bangalore. Transport department officials in Margao said they have formed two teams to check buses entering Goa at Pollem and Mollem. The Bangalore buses were fined 3,000 each for violating conditions in their permits. The buses had only temporary permits but were plying as if they had all-India permits, sources said. [TOI]
