Is min-MLA rift affecting Calangute-Baga?
Has a rift between tourism minister DilipParulekar and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo put a spanner in beach management on the Calangute-Baga stretch? Both BJP leaders are quick to rubbish "rumours" that all's not well between them, but industry observers believe otherwise. While the tourism department started this tourist season with a drive that saw some illegal deck beds cleared and beggars hauled off beaches, lawlessness on Goa's most visited beach stretch is slowly returning, say stakeholders. And the reason, they say, is the resistance the tourism department is facing from the Calangute MLA.
"Obviously, he (Lobo) was not happy when demolitions (in December 2012) were carried out in Baga, which is part of his constituency," said a member of the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG), on condition of anonymity.
He pointed out that the tourism department's initial momentum of clearing illegal shacks and commercial units slowed down post December 15. The beach stretch at the moment looks exactly like it has for several seasons now, choked with deck beds.[TOI]
