It’s time Panaji riders wore helmets: Arun Desai
The transport department has expressed the need to review the exemption of use of helmets for two-wheeler riders in cities due to an overall increase in the number of fatalities involving these vehicles.
Speaking to mediapersons, transport director Arun Desai said, "In municipal areas, there is exemption from wearing helmets but the time has come to review this decision." The department has also decided to start a special drive within a fortnight against two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets.
He also said that out of 289 fatal accidents in 2012, two-wheelers were involved in 168 fatal accidents.
Speaking further, Desai said that using film of any nature on car windows is not allowed as per the Supreme Court order dated September, 2012. He also said that the transport department has taken up a special drive and booked 2,700 cases.
"The fine is 100 but we insist on removing the film then and there," he said.
"We appeal to people to remove the film on their car windows, otherwise it would amount to an act of contempt of court," Desai said. [TOI]
