Jail inmate’s expose backfires
It was a "sting operation" of a different kind when an inmate of the Sada sub-jail tried to expose jail officials by allegedly using his mobile phone to capture video clips of the circulation of drugs, liquor and cigarettes in the jail.
The expose, however, backfired when he was later identified as the mastermind behind the supply of the prohibited items. According to sources, an inmate of the Sada sub-jail had captured a video clip on his mobile phone to prove that drugs, cigarettes, liquor, mobile phone, were freely available in the jail, in a bid to expose the laxity of jail officials.
Sources further informed that the inmate then submitted the video clips to a reporter, by transferring the contents via bluetooth, when he had gone to the Sessions Court at Margao on Tuesday.
Acting on reports in the media, Additional IGP (Prison) Damodar Shanke along with his team and Mormugao Deputy Collector/SDM Gourish Shankwalker, who is also the Additional Supdt of the Sada Sub Jail, carried out inspection inside the jail on Wednesday.
On interrogation, it was revealed that the inmate who had captured the video clip was himself the mastermind in the supply of the said items.
Speaking to Herald, Shanke said the jail authorities had no role in the supply of drugs, cigarettes, liquor, etc, to the jail inmates.
“The culprit, who captured the video clip, was himself responsible for supplying drugs, liquor, inside the jail,” Shanke informed. He said the phone which was used to record, was seized after a search in the jail. “We found cash, phone charger in the jail. The investigation will continue on Thursday,” he added.
Sources said Shanke issued an order to shift the culprit to Aguada jail and accordingly was done so. [H]
