Judicial inquiry launched into Sada jail riot

Vasco: The Judicial Magistrate First Class Vasco Judge Durga Madkaikar on Thursday began an inquiry into the Sada sub jail incident where all the 53 inmates unsuccessfully tried to escape leaving a history-sheerer dead and 13 others (12 inmates and a jailor Vithal Gawas) injured.According to sources, on the first day of judicial probe Judge Madkaikar recorded the statement of Jailor Vithal Gawas. The judge is expected to record various other statements including those of the prisoners who were present in the jail during the fateful night and after completion of probe the report will be forwarded to the government. On January 24, the Sada sub jail authorities without giving any clue to inmate Vinayak Karbotkar decided to shift him to Oras jail in Maharashtra. Thus he was taken out of Sada Sub jail but was brought back in the night, at around 10.30 pm after Oras jail authorities refused to admit Karbotkar.
Soon after Karbotkar returned to Sada Sub jail, he started creating ruckus as he was asked to occupy cell number 14 where no other inmates were lodged. Out of frustration, Karbotkar attacked the jail guard and later provoked others from cell number 13 and 15 to break open the cell grills. The mob after coming out of cell ransacked the jail premises which included a dispensary and a kitchen and took hold of the knives and scissors which they used to attack the jailor. The entire drama continued for over two hours after which the situation was brought under control by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).  Later, the security agency found Karbotkar dead inside the jail premises.Taking serious note of the incident, the state government ordered an inquiry which is now in progress.
