A swim on New Year’s Eve proved tragic for a youth from Davangere-Karnataka, when he drowned in the sea off Calangute, while it was a close call for 15 others as they were rescued in 10 other incidents along the coast on Monday.
According to lifeguard reports, four tourists were swimming at Calangute beach when one tourist, Saddam R (22) began to struggle in the water. Lifeguards rushed to his aid and brought him ashore. The victim, who had a shallow pulse and faced difficulty in breathing, was shifted in a lifeguard jeep to the Candolim PHC. A short while later, PHC doctors declared him dead.
Elsewhere, lifeguards rescued 15 others from different beaches at Baga, Arambol, Calangute and Candolim. [H]
