Koko nets winner for Dempo
Dempo Sports Club registered a solitary goal victory over Sporting Clube de Goa in their Kingfisher Professional League match at Nehru stadium, Fatorda on Tuesday.
The all-important goal was scored in the 45th minute of play through their dependable striker Koko Sakibo which gave Dempo three vital points.
The match was played on a slow pace with both the teams resorting to short passes but lacked the sting that could pose any sort of danger except for brief spells in both the sessions of play.
While the first half belonged to Dempo Sports Club who controlled the proceedings well with positional play, the second session belonged to Sporting Clube who despite having chances to restore parity could not succeed.
After Romeo Fernandes came close to scoring on two occasions before Dempo took the lead just a few seconds before the break, striker Koko Sakibo who played his first match after he sustained injuries did exceedingly well by scoring the all-important goal without which Dempo would not have been able to secure this win.
A good move from the middle saw defender Shallum Pires moving up with the ball and on reaching the box, unleashed a shot towards the direction of the rival goal. Koko Sakibo who was lurking close by followed the ball and sent it to the far corner of the nets to beat Sporting keeper Agnelo Gomes.
Young Romeo Fernandes could have added his name to the score sheet on two occasions wherein he once shot at the rival keeper and on the other occasion, his well taken shot was prevented from entering the nets by Sporting Clube’s most dependable defender Keita Boubakar.
Earlier, Sporting Clube’s striker Victorino Fernandes had a try at the rival goal but the shot lacked the necessary punch to cause trouble to the Dempo keeper Laxmikant Kattimani who brought off some good saves.
The second session was controlled well by the Sporting Clube team and substitute Obiora Anoure and Stepehen Bareto came very close in finding the mark. While Obiora’s try hit the cross bar, Stepehen’s shot was punched over by Dempo keeper Kattimani for an abortive flag kick.
Sporting Clube went on trying with some fast paced moves in the last few minutes of play, but their shots were off the mark.
Dempo proved to be dangerous on counter attacks and almost swelled their margin but tries by Koko and Romeo missed the mark narrowly. [NT]
