Legal mining will resume within 6-8 weeks after SC vacates ban order: CM

The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar on Thursday assured the House that his government would be able to re-start the state mining industry in its legal form, within 6 to 8 weeks from the day the Supreme Court vacates its order banning mining activity in Goa.

The Chief Minister also informed that the monthly cash compensation ranging from ` 3,000 to Rs 6,000 towards the rehabilitation of the people affected by closure of the mining industry in the state would begin within 10 days from the presentation of the budget for the year 2013-14, in the House. “This compensation package will come into force from January 1, 2013,” he added.
Replying to a related question during the Question Hour, Mr Parrikar, who also holds the mines and geology portfolio, said that the mining activity in the state has come to a halt due to the decision of his government to stop the illegal mining activity, the act of the Union Ministry of Forests and Environment to withdraw its environmental clearance certificates issued to the mining leases, and the October 5, 2012 interim stay of the apex court, on all mining operations in the state.
