Levelling of Nehru stadium pitch completed
The levelling of the football pitch at Nehru stadium, Fatorda has been completed well ahead of time, confirmed executive engineer Mr Elvis D’Souza and stadium manager Mr Guru Vernekar.
They said the work pertaining to levelling of the playing pitch has been perfectly done.
The grass on the pitch which is likely to be imported from the US will soon be laid and that this process is likely to be completed before the onset of rainy season.
“We expect the laying of the grass to be completed by April-May on the pitch,” disclosed Mr D’Souza.
The last I-league match of the ongoing season on this pitch was held on December 16 and from the next day itself the work had begun in full swing.
Asked what exactly was done from December 16 till date on this pitch, the stadium manager disclosed that the entire grass was removed, muff was shifted elsewhere from the pitch, and that the work of the playing pitch has been completed as present trenches are being dug on the pitch.
When asked the purpose of digging trenches, Mr Vernekar disclosed that it is being done for the purpose of drains which will help in keeping the pitch in good condition as there won’t be any sort of flooding on the pitch in the future.
Well placed sources disclosed that the stadium work is directly being monitored by the Chief Minister and the Executive Director of SAG Mr Elvis Gomes.
Mr Vernekar disclosed that as far as the stadium is concerned the reconstruction work is going on well as per the new plans, adding further that the target for its completion is August.
Asked whether there will be changes in the roofing of the stadium, Mr Vernekar said: “There won’t be any changes in the roofing and that just painting of the existing roofing of the sheets will be undertaken.”
It was also noticed that 25,000 odd seats have been removed as new seats have to be ordered to replace them.
When Mr D’Souza was contacted for his comments, he said that the NDT test of the stadium structure has already been done and found out to be satisfactory.
Asked to divulge, Mr D’Souza said that NDT (Non Destruction Test) is conducted for the testing of the existing structure and the recommendations, suggestions for future, which he said is the responsibility of the consultants.
Meanwhile, Mr Elvis Gomes told The Navhind Times that special lights called the ‘Arena Lighting’ is being installed at Tilak Stadium, Vasco adding further that five structures have already been completed. The ‘arena lights’ have already arrived it was informed.
Sources also disclosed that the promise given by the SAG Executive Director that Tilak stadium will be ready for holding I-league matches is surely being met.
By the end of this week, the lights should be ready at Tilak stadium. [NT]
