Major plastic clean-up drive undertaken in Chinchinim

In an unprecedented drive against plastic waste disposal at Chinchinim village, local citizens, youth, clubs, maritime institutions and the local panchayat body joined hands to clear the village roadsides of the tons of plastic waste on Sunday.
The entire road from Assolna bridge to Orlim bridge and right up to Digafond near Francon’s maritime academy was cleared of plastic waste disposed off by unscrupulous elements.
Youngsters made their presence felt at the Orlim bridge, while another group started the drive from the Assolna bridge at Sucaldem. Students from the NUSI and Francon’s maritime Academies also joined the local youth in clearing the waste along the roadside.
Sarpanch Antonio Joao Sequeira told newsmen that around 200-300 plastic bags have been arranged for collection of the plastic waste, adding that the waste would then be handed over to a waste collector. He thanked the village youth and clubs, besides the NUSI Maritime Academy and Frankon’s Maritime Academy for taking part in the drive. A local youth from Deussua-Chinchinim, Melicio told newsmen that the objective behind the drive is to bring about awareness amongst the citizens not to dump the waste along the road side.
“We want to send across the message that the youth are clearing waste dumped by others. The village youth will again come and clean the roadside of the waste, but we would also like to convey a message that those who dump the waste have now come under the scanner of the villagers. Recently, the gram sabha have resolved to impose strict fine and lodge police complaints against the unscrupulous elements”, he added. [H]
