Major works taken up in Canacona: MLA

Celebrating one year of its government in the State, the BJP claims to have taken up developmental works worth Rs 103.59 crore in Canacona taluka during the last one year.
Addressing a press conference in Canacona, Sports Minister and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar informed that the previous government’s pending bills of over Rs 1,300 crores in the PWD had hampered some important developmental works planned by the BJP government, forcing it to postpone the same for the next fiscal year.
“This deficit also had a telling effect in undertaking some major developmental works in Canacona taluka and due to this, there was an inordinate delay to commence a few sanctioned works,” Tawadkar said.
Tawadkar said PWD road works worth Rs 15 crores have been sanctioned for the taluka, including hot-mixing and construction of major roads in villages at Cotigao, Gaondongrim, Loliem, Shristhal and Canacona town.
Besides, the height of a dam under construction at Gaunem has been increased to an additional 2 metres, while Rs 7 crore has been sanction for other related works in the taluka.
According to the sports minister, the electricity department will take up works to the tune of Rs 56.88 crore, including the 3-km long underground cabling work at Nadkem (Cotigao) for the Dudh-Gram.
The electricity department will also undertake underground cabling work for the twin villages of Gaondongrim and Cotigao under the ST sub plan.
“There is substantial improvement in solving low voltage problems and frequent line snapping after substantial alignments have been replaced and 11 new transformers have been installed in the taluka,” informed Tawadkar.
He added that the agriculture department has disbursed subsidy to the tune of Rs 1.71 crore to 1,830 beneficiaries, while two newly-formed agricultural societies have been granted a 100% subsidy.
Commenting on other benefits, Tawadkar said that 94 of the 224 Laadli Laxmi claims have been sanctioned, while 993 of 4600 applications in the taluka have been accorded the Gruha Laximi benefits.
Tawadkar also informed that the Canacona Municipal Council has been given grant-in-aid of Rs 2 crores, while six panchayats have been given funds to the tune of Rs 1.75 crore in various developmental works during the last one-year period. The Loliem panchayat is not eligible for government grants as its income exceeds Rs 25 lakh.
He added that the mini-indoor stadium has already been sanctioned at the Shri Gaitonde complex at Chaudi at the cost of Rs 6.5 crore. [H]
