Mandovi river near Divar to be dredged for smooth ferry service
A 400 square meter stretch of River Mandovi, near Divar, will be taken up for dredging following complaints that under water rocks have been reportedly affecting ferry services during the last two years.
The Captain of Ports department Monday completed the tendering process and Vasco based company ~Vaibhavi Dredgers, has bagged the Rs 25 lakh tender. Two parties had bid for the work.
The Ports administration, after a survey conducted last year, had confirmed the presence of under water rocks and pinnacles which during low tide have been obstructing ferry boats from approaching the ferry ramps on the Vaxim-Amboi route, on the Divar side.
Hydrographic Surveyor S C Rai said, “As per the task entrusted to the contractor the rocks will have to be cut and dredged out and disposed off at sea at a distance of 20 nautical miles.” He said that the work would have to be completed within two months from the date of issue of the work order.
Meanwhile, the Captain of Ports department is proposing to re-tender the dredging of River Sal as only one party had submitted bids. Rai said since the dredging of River Sal is a huge task, there is need to have more bidders and this has compelled the government to cancel the earlier bid. Though dredging of Sal would be possible only after the monsoons, the department would begin the process for re-tendering. [H]
