Many adolescents in state turning alcoholics

Despite the efforts put in by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other volunteers to spread awareness among people not to take up the drinking habit, and help many abstain from alcohol abuse, there is an upward trend in the Goan society with many young people including teenagers and adolescents turning alcoholics.

Alcohol addiction is affecting various segments of the society like the youth, adolescents and women who take to drinking usually due to depression, failed relationships, work and peer pressures.

Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’ on the present trend of alcohol consumption among people in the state, Mr Joseph, a trustee of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a volunteer organisation, said that there are basically three categories of drinkers – people who drink within limit, hard drinkers, who usually attend parties and drink beyond their limits and lastly alcoholics, who are addicts.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. [NT]
