Margao police thwart Fatorda bandh, arrest convenor
Margao police thwarted the Fatorda bandh called by the Fatorda Development Committee (FDC) on Sunday to protest the police failure in arresting the accused in the Vasco girl rape case by placing under arrest Committee convenor Camilo Barretto under preventive detection.
Camilo cried foul over his arrest saying he was only demanding justice for the seven year old victim girl. Goemkar Convenor and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai said the police action against Camilo Barretto was uncalled for and has demanded that the police nab the accused in the rape case.
Margao police picked up Camilo Barretto this morning under preventive detection before he could take out a rally from the government Multipurpose hall, Borda. Jeeps load of policemen descended at the Multipurpose and took Camilo into custody before arresting him under section 151 of the Cr P C.
When contacted, Margao PI Sudesh Naik said Camilo was arrested on grounds that he was forcing business establishments to down shutters. “We had information that Camilo had told shop keepers on Saturday to support the bandh by closing down shutters on Sunday”, PI Naik said.
Meanwhile, Camilo was shifted to the Hospicio hospital around noon when he complained of giddiness and chest pain. He told newsmen at the Hospital that people of Goa would not rest till the police arrest the rapist in the Vasco case. “People of Goa will not be cowed down by such anti-people actions. We will continue to agitate till the police arrest the rapist”, he said. Later, Camilo was released on late Sunday evening on bail bond of Rs 10,000.
Meanwhile, MLA Vijai Sardessai told newsmen that he would raise the issue of the police failure to nab the Vasco rape accused on the floor of the House on January 29. He said the Margao police had in the past remained silent spectators when fundamentalist organizations were enforcing bandh in the city, while demanding to know whether the police apply different yardsticks to different people.[H]
