Margao set to witness two shigmo festivities

It’s official! The Commercial capital will play host to two Shigmo festivities – one by Madgaon Shigmotsav Samiti headed by BJP leader Damu Naik and the other by the rival group headed by Vasant Shirodkar.
This became evident on Monday when the Damu-led Shigmotsav Samiti offered the sacred coconut to Lord Damodar at Pimpalkatta, while the Shirodkar group told the media that the Samiti will hold a two-day Shigmotsav festival in the city on April 4-5.
On the other hand, Damu flanked by BJP leaders said his Samiti will commence its festivities from April 3 and will culminate in a Shigmo float parade on April 7. “Last year, there was only one Shigmo festival organized in the city. I fail to understand why certain persons are bell bent in organising Shigmo festival in the city this time round”, he added.
The Vasant Shirodkar group, however, said the Margao Shigmotsav Samiti headed by him has been organising Shigmo festival in the city since the last 26 years. He pointed out that unlike the rival Samiti, the Samiti headed by him is a registered body and produced all documents in support of his claim.
Replying to a question, he said the question of organising a float parade will arise only upon receiving permission from the government. “We had asked the Tourism department for permission to host the float parade in the city.
We had sought an appointment with Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar to invite him for the parade, but there’s no response from the government so far. That’s the reason, why our group has decided to hold two-day Shigmo festivities at the Lohia Maidan”, he said and reminded that the Madgao Shigmotsav Samit was forced in the year 1988 to promote the cultural, devotional and social activities and formed purely on democratic lines irrespective of political related interest.” [H]
