Market complex-cum-community hall at Cuncolim set to open, finally
After a long delay, the decks have finally been cleared for inauguration of the controversial Cuncolim municipal market complex-cum-community hall on February 16.But, the scheduled inauguration has not brought cheers for tiatrists and institutions, with some tiatrists in the know maintaining that the hall rent is much higher than the rates charged by Ravindra Bhavan, Margao and Curchorem.
Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Devendra Dessai sought to defend the decision of the civic body to charge Rs 10,000 as rent for a tiatr show and Rs 15,000 for weddings, saying the rent fixed by the municipality will help in maintenance. A local tiatrist said the hefty rent will only keep away tiatrists and contractors from staging a show at the hall, while suggesting a cut in rent to bring it on par with Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.
Questions are also being raised as to why the Council has not come out with a special rate for educational institutions to hold education-related programmes. The CMC chairperson, however, said that the civic body has already decided on the community hall rent, adding that he would suggest a special rate for educational institutes. The Rs 4.7 crore Cuncolim market complex-cum-800-seater community hall had kicked up a row of sorts after demands were made from various quarters for a vigilance probe into its construction. In fact, it’s more than a year since the project was completed and was awaiting inauguration. [H]
