Market vendors protest removal of business
A group of fruit vendors from Gandhi market called on Margao Municipal Chairperson Arthur D’Silva on Tuesday and protested over their removal from their place of business.
Led by Camilo Barretto, the vendors contended that they have been doing business in the market for years now and wondered how the Civic body could displace them from their place of occupation.
The Chairperson called MMC Chief Officer Sandhya Kamat for discussions and it was finally agreed that the civic body would not displace any licensed vendor.
The chief officer issued instructions to the market inspector to ensure that they check the licenses in possession of the vendors.
Meanwhile, the MMC Chairperson told newsmen that the civic body has reshuffled the market inspectors. He pointed out market inspector Anil Shirodkar has been deployed to check the legality of advertising boards put up by the establishments.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Council today initiated a drive against illegal boards and hoardings in the city. A municipal team led by market inspector Mohan Arlekar removed boards in the old market area of the city.
Heated arguments ensued between the municipal team and officials of a cooperative bank over the removal of the board installed by the bank.
MMC Chairperson Arthur D’Silva told newsmen that the drive will continue. [H]
