Matoli vendors get two sites in Mapusa

Mapusa: As a solution to the vexed issue of allocation of space for matoli vendors, Mapusa muncipality has decided that some vendors will be shifted to the taxi stand, while the rest will continue in the municipal market.Sources said that about 350-400 matoli vendors from various places in north Goa and some parts of Maharashtra travel to Mapusa market to sell various matoli items. Due to additional flow of seasonal vendors, the market gets congested and create parking and traffic issues. On Monday, Mapusa municipal council (MMC) chairperson Rohan Kavlekar, along with chief officer Clen Madeira, and municipal engineer Hussain Shah Muzawar inspected the market to take stock of the situation.
The authorities found that matoli vendors are spread across around 600 sqm of area while the taxi stand is around 200 sqm. The municipal inspector was issued direction to submit a report on matoli vendors and not to allow any vendor in the market until the final decision is taken.
“To avoid congestion in market, we have decided to shift some of the matoli vendors to the taxi stand, while others will continue in the market area. We have also decided that no vendor will be allowed to sit in the occupying road,” MMC chairperson Rohan Kavlekar said. [TOI]
