‘Mega project destroys water body in Navelim’

Issues concerning the rise in migrant population in the village and alleged irregularities in some mega-construction projects dominated the proceedings of the Navelim gram sabha held on Sunday.

Highlighting a mega construction project, gram sabha members cornered the sarpanch, Frank Fernandes, over the absence of any provision for a sewage treatment plant for the residential complex. Fernandes' reply seeking to put the blame on the town and country planning (TCP) department and the deputy director of panchayats for granting approvals to the project didn't help matters as gram sabha members alleged lack of transparency in the dealings. Villagers also pointed out to the destruction caused to a water body owing to the construction of the mega project and demanded that the water body be restored to its original condition.

Cruz Rodrigues, a gram sabha member, expressed concern over the security of the village owing to the rise of the migrant population in the village.[TOI]
