Mindful of partners’ sensitivities, BJP forays into Salcete cautiously
The BJP has opened its district office in the heartland of Salcete on Saturday, but party leaders have now decided to tread a cautious path lest its expansion plans in the minority areas is not looked upon by its alliance partners as encroachment in their constituencies.
In fact, BJP district President MLA Subhash Faldessai has sought to reassure the non-BJP ruling party MLAs that the party is not going to hurt their interests and sentiments. Faldessai’s latest stand assumes significance at is comes against the backdrop of his earlier statement that the BJP will strengthen its base in minority Salcete to keep the party in good stead in the event any MLA play mischief with the party.
Speaking to Herald after the inauguration of the district office at Malbhat, Faldessai said the party has drawn up its agenda to make its presence felt everywhere. “We have moved around the constituencies in Salcete. We have gathered some people, but at the same time, we are not going to hurt the MLAs, who are our alliance partners. Instead, we will take them into confidence as if they belong to our Party. As long as they are with our party, we will not hurt their interests. Finally, our aim is to reach out to the people and deliver, whether through our Party or through the Independents”, Faldessai said, adding that the BJP does not believe in discrimination when it comes to delivery of services.
Incidentally, both the BJP-backed Independent MLAs, Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado and his Velim counterpart Benjamin D’Silva, made their presence felt at the district office inauguration on Saturday. [H]
