Miscreants demolish PMC’s composting unit
Some miscreants demolished a composting unit of Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) at Yeshwantnagar-Ponda recently.
PMC had constructed 10 composting units a couple of years ago in view of the High Court directives.
According to sources, housing society at Yeshwantnagar, which had given permission to PMC to construct the composting unit, recently sought permission from the council to demolish the composting unit.
When contacted, PMC Chairperson Rukmi Dangui said: “We were in receipt of the request from the society, but during a council meeting we had denied permission to demolish the composting unit. How can we demolish the composting unit when it was constructed on the directions of the High Court?”
Chief Officer Pradip Naik said a complaint will be lodged with Ponda Police. “I have asked the municipal engineer to submit report and we will accordingly file police complaint. The composting units were constructed on High Court directives,” said Naik.
It may be recalled that opposition councillors had blamed PMC for its failure to operate composting units though there was garbage disposal issue in the city. PMC had claimed that all the composting units could not be used due to lack of manpower, but five composting units were in operation.
“PMC has 10 composting units at five locations in the city with varied capacity. Expect for the one that has been demolished, remaining nine are in operation,” informed Municipal Engineer Vinay Dessai. [H]
