MMC CO to hold another meet over biometric deadlock
Margao Municipal Chief Officer will hold another round of dialogue with aggrieved employees over the implementation of biometric finger-scan readers for recording of attendance.
Chief Officer, Sandhya Kamat, on Monday had a meeting with Panjim-based Municipal lawyer, Adv Padiyar, on the issue since the impasse over the issue continues to dog the municipal administration.
Sources in the know said the municipal lawyer is believed to have advised the MMC CO to hold another round of discussions with the employees and hear their grievances and demands. Sources said the CO will soon call a meeting with employees and listen to their grievances.
As per the High Court directions, then acting Margao Municipal Chief Officer Deepali Naik had an interaction with the municipal employees and heard their objections to the scan reader. In their written reply, however, the employees under the banner of Goa Municipal Employees Association had opposed the biometric finger scan readers on grounds that its implementation is not backed by law. In fact, the employees had threatened to strike work if the Civic body tried to bulldoze its way with the implementation.
The civic body had set December 1 as the deadline for its employees to record their attendance on the two biometric finger scan readers, but the employees defied the circular and instead continue to use the muster roll till date.
When the civic body first implemented the scan readers around half-a-decade ago, they came under stiff opposition from the municipal employees. So much so, they threatened to strike work, forcing the Council to abandon the project. [H]
