MMC to crack whip on encroachments
The Margao Municipal Council has decided to crack a whip on hawkers, handcarts and other encroachments on the city’s footpaths and passages.
This follows instructions issued by the district traffic committee headed by Collector N D Agrawal, which took serious cognizance of the traffic obstructions caused by the illegal hand carts and other roadside hawkers.
MMC Chief Officer Srinet Kothwale said he has issued instructions to all the Municipal inspectors to come down heavily on the handcarts and hawkers carrying out business on the roads and the pavements.
In fact, the Chief Officer pointed out that he has asked the market inspectors to submit a compliance report on the action initiated against the encroachments.
Incidentally, MMC Chairperson Arthur D’Silva had earlier this week warned the Civic workers of stern action, including memos, if they fail to keep the passages and footpaths free from encroachments.
The Chairperson had taken strong objection to the presence of fish vendors at the old fish market and warned of action against the MMC workers manning the market area. [H]
