Modern mortuary to open soon at Monte Hill

There’s finally good news in store for the people of South Goa. A state-of-the-art 20-unit capacity mortuary is finally taking shape at the TB sanatorium, Monte Hill.
If Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation, Managing Director Sanjit Rodrigues is to be believed, the mortuary will be commissioned within the next month and half with most of the civil work completed in all respects till date.
Rodrigues along with other officials took stock of the ongoing work at the TB hospital on Wednesday afternoon and set a deadline for the agencies to complete the work.
He later told Herald that the civil work, including plumbing, electrical fittings etc stand completed and the expert agencies will commence work on installation of the mortuary in the next 15 days. “The mortuary should start functioning within the next 45 days as work on the project is progressing satisfactorily,” he said.
Replying to a question, he said the question of utilizing the new mortuary for medico-legal cases and leaving the existing morgue at Hospicio for general purpose will be decided at a later stage. It is learnt that the previous government had mooted the proposal to allot the Monte Hill mortuary for the medico-legal cases.
The new mortuary is estimated to have cost the exchequer around Rs 58 lakhs.
The need for a higher capacity mortuary was felt in South Goa since the existing mortuary was found falling short of the requirements. Instance are galore when bodies had to be transported to the GMC morgue at Bambolim for want of space at Hospicio. [H]
