Modi has soft corner for Goa: Parrikar

Panjim: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may be considering Goa as his lucky mascot and hence has a soft corner towards the State.Addressing the gathering at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Super Specialty block, Parrikar thanked the Prime Minister, Union Shipping and Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan and Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda for sanctioning projects worth Rs 25,000 crore to Goa.“We are lucky that Prime Minister has additional soft corner for Goa. He has never said no to me for any project. Anything I put before him, he has cleared. Prime Minister remembers Goa, may be as a lucky mascot or may be some other reason, but he always has been supportive to Goa,” Parrikar said. He added, “We should take advantage of that and work in that direction.”The Chief Minister said that Goa’s tax and non tax revenue stands at Rs 6300 crore, while the Central share this year is Rs 3700 crore. “Central share to State budget is almost 40 percent. The State budget component is Rs 10,000 crore,” he explained adding, “State can spend maximum Rs 1500-2000 crore annually on projects like roads, water supply and health amenities.”
“But today the projects which are taken up with support from the Centre like new roads, water pipelines, environment project and health are estimated at Rs 25,000 crore,” he added.“We need to acknowledge that where the State could have just contributed Rs 1500-2000 crore towards some major developmental work annually, Centre, which is already contributing 40 percent in our budget and is giving another Rs 25,000 crore projects,” Parrikar stated.Parrikar said that if the State managed to take up major projects like the national highway widening and Zuari bridge, it was because there was backing from the Centre. “Goa on its own would not have been able to take up these projects,” he said.Parrikar hailed Modi as a world leader who is always grounded when it comes to problems at the grassroots level.“While he is a world leader, on the other hand, he is thinking about the issues of the grassroots. He is concerned that many people don’t have proper toilet facilities and there is open defecation. He would be inquiring on the progress of open defecation free scheme. Either I will get letter from his office or he himself will call me,” he added. [H]
