Money for comfort, but none for compactor trucks!

Margao: On one hand the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has decried the decline of resources, while on the other seem to throw logical thinking in the bins, when it comes to the question of comfort of those elected to serve.Well, this could be the only plausible conclusion when one looks at the facts that reveal that MMC has splurged Rs 18 lakh to purchase three new passenger vehicles to ferry them around, while the demand for garbage compactor trucks that has been voiced for months has been cast aside with utter disdain. In fact, not so long ago, the MMC had said that they did not have any money to spend on the repairs of the compactors. The MMC now has two brand-new Maruti Wagon R cars and a multi-utility vehicle Maruti Ertiga, which the MMC Junior Engineer Rohit Gaonkar declared were for official purposes. However, two compactors that have been broken down for months have been lying in the old market vehicles yard of MMC and at Sonsodo that have yet to be repaired. Incidentally the purchasing of new compactors would help solve the escalating garbage problems in Margao, which ideally should have been the priority.
The MMC has huge outstanding revenue which needs to be recovered, which has been increasing by every passing day, besides MMC workers’ salaries too amounts to over Rs 1 crore and thus many have questioned the move to buy cars when the decision should have been socially-oriented rather than merely seeking comfort.According to the MMC sources the Council has spent Rs. 7.99 lakh on the Ertiga vehicle, which has been reserved for the MMC Municipal Engineer, while the two Wagon R vehicles have been purchased at a cost of Rs 5.25 lakh each are for the Engineers of Technical Section.Incidentally, barely a year ago the MMC had purchased a Toyota Innova vehicle at a cost of around Rs 17 lakh and the move had sparked enough controversy to make the Chairperson return the car immediately. The MMC had not purchased any vehicle after that controversial incident. The Collector of South Goa Swapnil Naik who holds the charge of the MMC Chief Officer could not be reached for comment.MMC sources have also revealed that the MMC chairperson has yet again evinced interest to have an Innova car and the discussion on the controversial issue had begun at ministerial level. If insiders are to be believed she may have her way this time. [H]
