Monte Music festival

The eleventh edition of the Monte Music festival, organised by Fundacao Oriente and Cidade de Goa will be held between February 1 and February 3 at the Chapel of Our Lady of Mount, Old Goa.

The restoration of the Chapel in 2002 flagged off this annual event, which attracts musicians from across the world to participate. Delegate Director of Fundacao Oriente, Eduardo Carvalho highlighted the role the festival plays in keeping alive the history and culture of Goa. “The festival not only preserves Goa’s rich history but helps promote tourism to a great extent,” he said. Like every year, this unique festival will be an amalgamation of Indian and Western classical music. The Fado also is one the main highlights. Hindustani classical singer, Pravin Gaonkar, Sonia Sirsat, Western Soloist Faya Monteiro, and Stuti Choral Ensemble will represent Goa. A Kathak recital by Abhimanyu and Vidha Lal from Delhi, The Capital City Minstrels from Delhi, Carnatic musician Dr Anusuya kulkarni on the Anghklung (An Indonesian instrument made out of bamboo) and Deirdre Lobo D’Cunha from the US are some of the performers among many others. “We have tried to showcase young and budding talents, since they have shown an interest to participate in the festival; like 12 year old Rahul Lobo who is Goan but based in Dubai, Rahul Bharadwaj from Bangalore and others,” said Ms Yvonne Rebello of the Fundacao Oriente. “Marco Rodriguez from Portugal will also be performing, and he will be conducting a workshop for music enthusiasts on February 2,” added Mr Carvalho. Performances take place at the courtyard and inside the chapel. The Chorao and Divar Islands and River Mandovi as the background, provide a perfect ambience for the musical extravaganza. “The setting sun is the backdrop for the festival that begins each day at dusk,” said Ms Rebello. Performances inside the chapel will be open to pass holders only. Passes will be available from January 22 onwards at the Fundacao Oriente office behind People’s HS, Fontainhas, Panaji.
