Mopa issue: Navy wants to grab all of Dabolim, says Vijai Sardesai
Goemkar convenor and independent MLA Vijai Sardesai alleged that the Indian Navy has vested interests in "quickening the birth of Mopa and death of Dabolim."
"The chief minister has remarked that if the Airport Authority of India (AAI) wants land for parking, let the Navy give it. This statement is not just foolish but also self-defeating given the fact that the Navy, which had agreed to the then Governor S S Sidhu in April 2011 to hand over 12.4 acres of land to the AAI for the expansion of Dabolim airport, later went back on its commitment," said Sardesai.
The Navy said that its representatives who had given the commitment to the governor were not authorized to do so and the same land was required for expansion in the future, " he said, adding that the Navy holds 1,900 acres of land at Dabolim, while AAI holds only 30 acres civil operations.
He expressed shock that the earlier Congress government had allowed a naval officer on Mopa's steering committee. "There is already a provision of a naval enclave at Mopa even before the airport has come into being," said Sardesai. [TOI]
