Mormugao civic body to devise methods to improve revenue

Vasco: Stating that Mormugao Municipal Council’s (MMC) financial condition is “weak”, Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar on Thursday informed that the civic body will devise methods to improve revenue generation.

The Chief Officer said the revision of the municipal property lease rent to present time, imposition of house taxes through structural assessments of the unauthorised structures etc, are the few things likely to be implemented.

Sankhwalkar said MMC’s economic condition of is not so good. The revenue such as octroi duty, etc, was stopped following the implementation of GST.

He said, “Looking at the current situation, as per the 2018 circular, all illegal structures in the municipal jurisdiction have been taken up for structural assessment. MMC teams will start identifying such structures and on the basis of structural assessment, the house tax will be collected.”

The Chief Officer said, “Some municipal properties and premises, which have been given out on the lease and the rent we are receiving is as per the 25-year-old lease rate. We have sought for revision of the rate as per the present time. The matter is with the Directorate of Municipal Administration. Some, which are caught up in litigations, we are thinking of appointing a mediator for a final settlement in order to generate revenue for the municipality.”

Sankhwalkar said, This process will take at least four months and after that the revenue generation will be regular and the economic condition will improve”. [H]
