Terming the allegations made against him as “baseless”, Mamlatdar Sudhir Kerkar said he has no right to intervene in the functioning of the Morombi-O-Grande tenant association until and unless genuine grievances of misconduct, misappropriation of funds are addressed to him by an aggrieved tenant.
“The tenant association is responsible for the upkeep of the sluice gates, maintaining the accounts, laying down the terms and conditions of the sluice gate auction, conduct of the auction and various other functions,” he said and added that holding the Mamlatdar responsible for the failures of the tenant association is not justified.
“My job is limited to supervising the functioning of the tenant associations and to act on any genuine complaint received from a tenant,” he informed while stating that he has not received any such complaint thus far.
When apprised that farmer, Charles D’Souza, has complained several times in the past, Kerkar informed that D’Souza is not a member of the tenant association and hence his complaint cannot be entertained.
“D’Souza has personal issues with the committee members of the tenant association, which he should resolve with them and not involve the Mamlatdar,” he added while advising farmers, who are not members of a tenant association and whose crops are damaged due to saline water, to approach the Agriculture Department for compensation.
“The Agriculture Department submits a report to the Mamlatdar and the Mamlatdar has powers to direct the tenant association to compensate the affected farmers,” he informed.
On the issue of expiry of term of the Morombi-O-Grande tenant association committee, Kerkar said he has already started the process of directing the tenant association to hold an election and a notice to this effect will be issued soon.
When informed that several farmers, including D’Souza, have applied for inclusion of their names in the tenant association, Kerkar said his office is in the process of including the names of deserved candidates in the list. [H]
