Mother convicted for inducing minor daughter into flesh trade

PANJIM: The Children’s Court convicted one Shanta Chodankar of Baina Vasco for forcing her minor daughter into prostitution and sentenced her to undergo seven years rigorous imprisonment, one year simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh payable to the girl. The court also said that imprisonment may extend to a further six months if Chodankar fails to pay the fine.

The Court examined 11 witnesses in support of the case and found Chodankar to be punishable under Sections 4 and 5 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956.

Chodankar was arrested on September 30, 2014 and was released on bail on November 16, 2004. Crime Branch officials submitted in court that efforts were made to trace the other accused but they were unable to nab them.

Crime Branch in July 2004 booked a case against Chodankar, Shivprakash Ayangar and a lady known as Sapana. However, the other two accused are still absconding.

Crime Branch filed the charge sheet in 2011 under Section 109 read with 376 of IPC, 4 & 5 of Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 and under Section 2 (m) punishable under Section 8 (2) and under Section 9 (4) of the Goa Children’s Act, 2003.

Crime Branch submitted that Chodankar and Sapana induced the minor girl into prostitution in Sapna’s rented premises to the accused Ayangar. Chodankar and Sapana were charged with child abuse for subjecting the minor girl into sexual exploitation by Ayangar.

Children’s Court President Vandana Tendulkar pronounced the sentence last week and case was presented by Public Prosecutor K Sanzgiry on behalf of the state.(H)
