Nanoda areas inundated after heavy spells of rain

Sankhali: Bicholim and Sattari areas witnessed another day of heavy spells of rain on Saturday. With continuous downpour over Friday and then Saturday again, water levels of rivers in Bicholim and Sattari surged. However, on Sunday, the locals had a bit relief with subdued rainfall but some areas did witness inundation, including Nanoda.

On Saturday night, water level of Par river and Nanoda river crossed the danger mark and Nanoda areas including Bhatwadi, Bamanwada were affected. The water entered few houses at Bhatwadi.

The structure housing Shantadurga Sports Club at Nanoda was inundated so also the Nanoda-Dodamarg road was under water on Saturday night.

However, on Sunday, the situation returned to normal, informed mamlatdar Pravinjay Pandit.

The level of Bicholim river rose to above four metres while, the level of Valvanti river at Sankhali rose to about 3 metres.

Pumps were used to drain out excess water but now the situation is under control, informed WRD AE Naik.

On Sunday, parts of Sattari taluka witnessed rainfall but will less intensity. Some areas were flooded and tree fall incidents were reported.

In Bicholim also tree falls were reported, informed fire station officer Shripad Gawas.

Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar on Saturday visited Sal village and reviewed the situation. He directed the disaster management authorities to keep a close watch on the rain situation as catchment areas witnessed heavy spells of rains.

Both Maharashtra and Goa WRD officials should coordinate while releasing the Tilari dam water, he said.

Water level of Anjunem dam crossed 79.79-metre mark on Sunday and the total rainfall recorded was1521 mm, informed an official. [NT]
