National Congress Party to decide on Goa president before January 26
The National Congress Party (NCP) state executive committee will meet next week to choose the next president of the party. Former tourism minister Nilkant Halarnkar is the front runner for the post.
Speaking to TOI, NCP spokesperson Avinash Bhonsle said, "The meeting would be called on Tuesday or Wednesday to reach a consensus on the next president of the party." The process of selecting a candidate for the president's post will be completed by January 26.
Besides executive members, the meeting will be also attended by NCP leaders and special invitees. Bhonsle said that recent the visit of NCP national president and Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar to Goa had hinted the new leadership will be put in place by January-end.
Pawar had a lengthy discussion with the party workers and asked them finalize the name for the president's post.
"Pawar said that he would come to Goa to announce the next president," said Bhosle.
He also said that once the president and executive committee is in place then the name of the candidate for parliament election would be finalized.
"Last time we had to bring in a candidate from another party but this time we will announce the name way ahead of the election so that the candidate has enough time for the campaign," said Bhonsle. [TOI]
