Navelim MLA holds meeting with engineers of sewerage corporation, Margao Municipality

The Navelim MLA and Minister for Fisheries, Mr Avertano Furtado, held a meeting with the engineers of the sewerage corporation and Margao Municipality, on Saturday,  to  discuss the proposed bigger sewage treatment plant  at Shirvodem, Navelim.

The meeting was held at the residence of the minister.  Speaking to this daily, Mr Furtado said  the meeting was called to explain to them that the existing land of 35,000 sq mts can well accommodate the two treatment plants and that  there is no need  to utilise more land for it.
“The officials  from the sewerage section were asking for more land to build the bigger sewerage  treatment plant. But,  I  convinced  them  and showed them  how  on the existing  35, 000 sq mts of land, the two treatments plants,  one  6.7 MLD  plant proposed and  taken up  by JICA and the other 21.5 MLD plant  can be built,’’ he  said.
Mr Furtado disclosed that the government has already made a budgetary provision of  Rs 45 crore to built the  21.5  MLD  sewerage treatment plant so that it can take up the waste of Navelim along with other areas of Margao and Fatorda.
“Once the JICA work is completed, I told them to use it in place of the existing plant and accordingly the existing sewerage treatment plant can be demolished to make away for a new bigger plant,’’ he  explained.
The minister said that the engineers agreed to make use of  35, 000 sq mts of land for  both the plants without  asking for more land.
It may be recalled that the former Navelim MLA and the PWD minister, Mr Churchill  Alemao had acquired  around  lakh square metre area for the expansion of the plant. [NT]
