Need highlighted for industrial policy for job creation

 

An inter-collegiate debate competition on tourism held at Ravindra Bhavan here on Saturday saw views on positive and negative aspects of tourism. The competition, based on the topic – ‘Tourism as a viable development strategy for Goa’, was organised by the Young Women’s Catholic Association of Goa in association with Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.
 
Colleges including BITS Pilani, Salgaocar College of Law, Dhempe College, Chowgule College, Carmel College, Shri Shri Ravi Shankar Management College participated in the debate.
 
Focusing on the positive aspects of tourism, the debaters said tourism is the major contributor to GDP. They said tourism provides better opportunities to invest in infrastructure and also creates jobs in hotel industry. They further highlighted that tourism also helps in exposing the Goan culture to the world.
 
Those who spoke about negative aspects of tourism said that it led to social problems such as drugs, human trafficking etc. They contended that beach tourism was responsible for causing environmental damage and that non-Goans were the actual monetary beneficiaries of the industry. [NT]
