NGO demands facilities for disabled in schools

Bailancho Saad has demanded that the Education department should not only make available facilities for the intellectually disabled in all schools within six months, but also prepare a curriculum for them, in the backdrop of the Shradanand High School, Poinguinim taking back, albeit reluctantly, the girl who was dismissed on grounds of being a slow learner.

As per Supreme Court order on 3rd October 2012 all states have to provide all facilities under RTE including teaching and non teaching staff, toilet facilities for boys and girls, classrooms, drinking water etc within six months. The order makes it clear that the directions are for all states and all schools whether state owned, privately owned, aided or unaided, minority or non minority,” Sabina Martins of Bailancho Saad said.

“The order makes it clear that if the directions are not fully implemented, it is open to the aggrieved parties to move the supreme court for appropriate orders,” Martins added calling that the government should provide for special educators and staff required in all schools.

Bailancho Saad has also demanded that the government should provide detailed guidelines for schools on how to go about practicing inclusive education and send them to every school so that the child with disability is not kept in isolation and not discriminated. [H]
