NGO holds silent protest against corrupt cops


City-based NGO, United Goans Welfare Front on Thursday held a silent protest in front of the Communidade building here against corrupt police officers and corruption in the police department.
They urged Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to weed out the criminal in police uniforms out of service in the interest of the public and the state and set a discipline trend to the entire police force.
Front president Socorro D’Souza told newsmen that the objective behind the silent protest is to tell the government that corruption has reached high levels in the police department. “Names of certain police officers are figuring in the orders. We would like to tell the government to send these officers home”, he demanded.
Referring to Parrikar’s statement that nearly 50 per cent of the police force is indisciplined, the Front underlined the need to dismiss policemen bring bad name for the police department and the government and replace them with new recruits.
“There are certain orders passed against certain police officers, but they are given plum postings by the government. There are so many good officers who should be encouraged with good postings”, he demanded. [H]
