Nilam ‘ hits’ State too

Cyclone Nilam which hit Tamil Nadu near Mahabalipuram on Wednesday evening affected weather pattern in Goa with rain and cloudy skies bringing down temperatures by more than 5 degrees during the last 24 hours.

While Goa was outside the path of the cyclone and therefore did not merit alerts or warning messages, the weather bureau reported light showers at several places since Thursday morning.

A light drizzle was reported almost everywhere in Goa throughout Thursday. Goa   which had been reeling under severe heat during the last fortnight virtually saw temperatures dropping from 34 degrees recorded Wednesday to 30 degrees Thursday morning and further to 27.5 degrees by evening.

K V Singh, heading the weather bureau in Goa said that this was on account of the cyclone along the East coast and a depression reported in south interior Karnataka on Thursday afternoon.

“The change of weather is likely to continue over the next three to four days,” Singh said pointing out further that a low depression is also likely to occur in the Arabian Sea.

Goa is also likely to experience rain and thunder showers over the next few days. The weather bureau Thursday recorded 0.6 mm rainfall in Panjim, 0.2 mm rainfall in Mormugao and 1.5 mm rainfall in Sanguem. [H]
