NIO lab catches fire, loss pegged at Rs 10 lakh
Chemical equipment, electronics goods and furniture were reduced to ashes in a fire that engulfed the Microbiology laboratory at the National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula early Tuesday morning.
Rajendra Haldankar, Assistant Divisional Officer of the District Fire Station in Panjim, said that soon after receiving information at about 7.43am, a fire tender was rushed to the spot.
Fire team led by fire fighter A M Raut doused the fire before it could spread to the adjacent laboratories.
The department has written to the NIO and the Goa police for their respective inspection reports and other details, as the exact reason for the fire is not known.
The loss is estimated at around Rs 10 lakh.
The laboratory is located on the second floor of Biology Annex Building in the premise.
“We broke opened the locked room. It was covered with thick smoke. The chemicals were stored in the locker,” Haldankar narrated. [H]
