NIT conducts feasibility study at Cuncolim for opening unit
In a latest development, officials of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) carried out a fresh inspection of the property on the Cuncolim-Balli border to once again explore the possibility of setting up the Institute at the site.
Though no final decision has yet been taken on the location of the institute, sources said the NIT Director and other officials have evinced keen interest in the Cuncolim-Balli land compared to the alternative sites at Ambaulim, adjoining the Cuncolim Industrial Estate and Canacona.
Senior officials of the Directorate of Technical education confirmed that the inspection took place on Friday, but said no final decision has yet been taken on the exact site.
Sources said the government is also ready to intervene and help the NIT acquire the land in question on condition the Institute settle for around five lakh sq mts as against the initial proposal of 12 lakh sq mts of land. It is learnt that the Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik has been kept abreast of the interest shown by NIT in the Cuncolim-Balli land.
Meanwhile, the Convenor of the Balli Citizens Committee Prashant Naik has said that the Committee would reconsider its opposition to the NIT project if the Institute is ready to climb down on the land requirements to five lakh sq mts.
He further said that the Committee would have no objection to the project if not a single house goes for demolition and people are not displaced by the project.
The authorities had last year notified Section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act to acquire land admeasuring 12 lakh sq mts along the Cuncolim-Balli border for the NIT project. The proceedings, however, lapsed following objections by a group of people from both sides of the border. [H]
