No Aadhaar led to delay in RFID card: Fisheries dept

Panaji: The delay in issuance of radio frequency identification (RFID) cards to fishermen this season is due to their non-submission of Aadhaar numbers, the directorate of fisheries told the government on Tuesday.Fisheries secretary Govind Jaiswal told TOI that “since many of the fishermen didn’t do so, there was a delay in issuance of cards.”The government recently issued a show cause notice to director of fisheries Shamila Monteiro demanding a reason for the delay. The notice, signed by Jaiswal, stated that the cards are supposed to be issued to fishermen before the fishing season commences after the 61-day mandatory fishing ban.
The fishing season began on August 1 after the two month-long ban, yet cards were not issued to many fishermen. Following this, provisional RFID cards were given to the fishermen so that their activities are not hampered.Monteiro has been issued a warning to complete ‘such tasks’ on time. “We have asked the fisheries department to be careful about such lapses in future.” Jaiswal said.It may be recalled that fisheries minister Vinod Palyekar recently said that an inquiry would be conducted, through the fisheries secretary, into the irregularities and delay in issuing cards to fishermen and trawler crew.
