Nod for Mapusa mkt overhaul plan

Mapusa: The Mapusa Municipal council (MMC), during a special council meeting on Tuesday, resolved to grant approval to the proposed redevelopment plan of the Mapusa municipal market.The resolution was passed by 16 to 2 votes. Councilors Tushar Tople and Vibha Salgaonkar voted against the resolution, councilor Sandeep Falari abstained from voting and councilor Sanjay Mishal was absent.MMC chairperson Rohan Kavlekar said that the plan had been presented before chief minister Manohar Parrikar, the councilors, the market committee and the Mapusa Merchants Association.The project, which will be taken up in two phases, without disturbing the existing market structure and set up, will include features including CCTV surveillance, a fire hydrant system, underground cabling, toilets, water facilities, ATM facilities, solar panels, etc.The market roof will be covered and the market will have three ring roads which will be free from vendors.
Phase I will be undertaken at a cost of Rs 19.6 crore and phase II, at Rs 17 crore.
The issue of approval to call for expression of interest for putting up a garbage treatment plan at Cunchelim was differed.Councilor Sandip Falari suggested that the council accepts the proposal of the North Goa solid waste management corporation to send the segregated garbage from Mapusa to the facility at Saligao for treatment.
