Panchayat elections notification issued

Panjim: Counting of votes of the 186 village panchayats that will go to polls on June 11, will be held on June 13.The State Election Commission (SEC) on Monday issued a notification announcing the schedule for the panchayat elections, even as reservation of wards is yet to be notified by the Directorate of Panchayat.The notification, issued by State Election Commissioner RK Srivastava, says that the nomination for the polls would be accepted from May 18 to May 25, except May 21 being Sunday, at the concerned Returning Office at the taluka level.Scrutiny of the nominations will be held on May 26 and 27 while withdrawals, if any, can be done on May 29. The five-year term of the panchayats ends on May 26.
Bardez with 33 villages has the most wards at 279, followed by Salcete which has 30 panchayats and 250 wards. Ponda taluka, which has 19 panchayats stands third with 167 wards, followed by 158 wards in Tiswadi which has 18 panchayats. Pernem and Bicholim talukas with 17 VPs each, have 129 and 125 wards respectively.Dharbandora taluka has the lowest number of VPs and wards. Having just five panchayats, it has 41 wards. Canacona and Sanguem taluka with seven panchayats each have got 57 and 53 wards respectively. While Mormugao has 88 wards in its 10 VPs, Sattari has 94 wards in 12 panchayats. [H]
