Panjim Footballers enter finals
Panjim Footballers managed to scrape past CJ Brothers Valpoi 2-1 to enter the play-off finals of the GFA’s Third division, played at Duler grounds, here on Wednesday.
Panjim Footballers scored from the opportunities they got and were leading the first session by two quick goals scored in the 29th and 31st minute.
In the 29th minute, Jesus Estrocio set up Leichombam Singh who scored with a neat placement. Two minutes later Panjim colts further consolidated their lead through a fine solo effort from the boots of Aahan Philip, 2-0.
Valpoi coach Asfa Ali Khan badly missed their star striker Manzoor Khan, who went on loan to Nagoa Sporting Club for the ongoing Second Division League.
The delay in conducting the third division playoff, proved fatal for his team lamented the coach.
In the absence of Manzoor Khan his team-mates Mohamad Shaikh missed at least four open sitters.
Panjim keeper Rohan Viegas twice came to his team rescue as he denied Safin Khan from scoring.
However in the 80th minute Abdul Khan managed to pull one up for Valpoi from the penalty spot, after Shawyn Fernandes had handled the ball inside the 18-yard box, 2-1.
With the sending off Shawyn for second booking Panjim footballers were reduced to ten men. Valpoi exerted tremendous pressure on the rival citadel but Abdul Khan saw two of his close range shots hit the Panjim side post. [NT]
