Panjim, Mormugao asked to be on alert for spring tides

Panjim: Revenue Department has issued a weather advisory, following an alert received from INCOlS (Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services), that the tidal heights may be above normal in low-lying areas due to the perigean spring tides especially during high tide times from January 2 to January 5.As per the advisory, the high tide would be from 9am to 1pm and 11pm to 2am and Iow-lying areas, particularly Mormugao, Panjim and Vasco da Gama, have been asked to remain alert to prevent a probable effect that can arise due to the perigean spring tides.
Perigean spring tides occur when the moon’s perigee (closest point to Earth) coincides with a spring tide, when the earth, sun and moon are nearly aligned every two weeks.
Last weekend, Tourism Department had directed shack owners, water sports operators and others conducting businesses on beaches to remain on high alert on January 1 and 2 and January 30, 2018. [H]
