Parrikar to assess requirements along Sinquerim-Baga belt
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is likely to visit the Sinquerim- Baga beach belt on Friday to assess whether to give in to shack owners request to increase the allocation of beach beds from five to 20.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said he had led a delegation of 30 shack owners from Sinquerim Candolim-Calangute-Baga beach belt to the Altinho residence of the chief minister on Wednesday, to impress upon him the need to increase beach beds from the present limit of five beds to 20. Lobo informed that shack owners went to his residence on Wednesday morning with their grievances after which he led their delegation to meet the chief minister.
Lobo stated that Parrikar agreed to inspect the Bardez beach belt along with the Tourism Minister and Director of Tourism on Friday to see what could be done in their best interest.
The Calangute MLA said that the shack owners contend that the demand for beach beds had come from foreigners and these were required to ensure steady business. Presently the shack owners have been allowed only five beds, he added.
Parrikar had visited the busy Baga belt in September to see for himself problems faced by shack owners.
The five beach beds limit was imposed in the new Beach Shack Policy and the number was unlikely to be increased.
But with the CM now once again agreeing to tour the area, shack owners are keeping their fingers crossed and remain hopeful over allocation of 20 beds of beach beds. [H]
