Pernem fire personnel rescue 3 trapped persons after trucks veer off

Mapusa: Three persons, including two drivers and one cleaner, were rescued by fire personnel, attached to Pernem fire station, following two separate accidents reported at Malpem and Vironda on Saturday.

According to Pernem fire station, first accident was reported at around 1.15 pm on Saturday wherein a tipper truck, proceeding towards Panaji from Sawantwadi, carrying concrete stones, suffered tyre burst and lost control and went off the road at Malpem. The impact was such that rear wheels of the truck also got detached.

Pernem fire personnel had to cut through the cabin of the truck by using a hydraulic cutter to rescue driver Baban Bhalekar and cleaner Dinesh Kerarkar, who were trapped in it. They were then rushed to district hospital for treatment.

In the other accident that was reported at around 1.45 pm, a truck, carrying medicine consignment, met with an accident near Government College at Vironda after the vehicle lost control and fell on one side, resulting in the driver getting trapped inside the cabin.

The rescue team comprised of sub officer Prashant Dhargalkar, Ramdas Parab, Prashant Sawal Desai, Sahadev Chodankar, Vikas Chawhan, Shekhar Mayekar, Avinash Naik, Pradip Asolkar, Prajyot Hoble, Manoj Salgaonkar and Amol Parab. Even an off-duty fire staffer, attached to Mapusa fire station, Pramod Mahale, who was on his way back, joined the rescue effort.[NT]
