Pipeline bursts; water supply to Mormugao taluka disrupted
Water supply to many parts of Mormugao taluka was disrupted after the main water pipeline burst at two points in Zuari Nagar and Chicalim on Thursday.
While the rupture at the Zuari Nagar pipeline was repaired by noon, sources in PWD stated that work to repair the pipeline at Chicalim would be completed by 8 pm on Thursday.
Speaking to Herald, locals said the water pipe burst at about 3 am and despite repeated calls to the PWD office at Baina, no one from the department closed the valve.
“At about 4.30 am, some locals went and informed the staff on duty and it was only then the staff went to the site and closed the valve. However, the water flow continued till 6.30 am,” said a local.
When contacted, PWD official stated that the water pipeline was old and weak. “The road has been widened and due to constant movement of vehicles, the water pipeline which was weak got damaged and ruptured,” added the official.
The official further said the repair work at Zuari Nagar was completed by afternoon. The repair work at Chicalim will be completed by 8 pm and residents will get normal water supply,” said the official. [H]
