Plain-clothed cops to be deputed on buses
In view of the recent gang-rape incident in Delhi, and to curb the incidents of molestation and eve-teasing in Goa, the state police have now decided to depute plain-clothed policemen in public transport buses so as to bring the culprits to book.
The Superintendent of Police, North, Mr Vijay Singh has said that in view of the rising number of cases of rape, molestation and eve-teasing in the state, police has now initiated this move to keep a check on the bad elements in crowded buses. He further said that policemen in uniform will also monitor the buses, which are used by women including college students and working ladies as a means of transport. Many women find it unsafe to travel in crowded buses and are often the victims of molestation and eve-teasing.
“We may even put lady police constables on the job. Besides, we have re-launched the 1091 helpline for women in distress. Once anybody calls on that number, lady police personnel will follow it up and divert all the distress calls to the concerned women police stations either in North or South district or other police stations for prompt action,” Mr Singh said. He further said that immediately a lady police staff would be made available to the caller to render help to the distressed female. He further said that this is an unique step taken by the state police in order to safeguard the interests of women. [H]
