Police efforts futile as traffic violations continue in Salcete

 

Even though multi-pronged efforts were made by the Margao traffic cell to educate vehicle drivers on the rules and regulations of Motor Vehicles Act, the traffic violations and disregard to traffic rules and regulations continues in Salcete. The main objective of the drive was to bring traffic discipline and better road sense among motorists.
 
Margao traffic cell which monitors areas of eight-constituency Salcete taluka has until November this year booked 47,162 cases and collected a fine of Rs 52,53,050. Last year, the Margao traffic cell had booked 45,645 cases under Motor Vehicles Act and Rules and collected a fine of Rs 49,14,300 from offenders.
 
The Superintendent of Police Traffic, Mr Vishram Borkar, when contacted, said that cases of using harsh horns, parking in no parking zones, driving without uniform, over-speeding, failure to issue ticket to passengers, etc were booked. Cases of driving in no entry zones, driving a vehicle without license or permit and driving under the influence of alcohol were also booked, he said. Fines were also imposed where vehicles were found to have no registration plates and faulty number plates, Mr Borker added.
 
Among other cases, drivers who did not have the mandatory Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates were booked. Other cases involved private vehicles being used as tourist vehicles, no tax remittance challans and vehicles without insurance cover and registration certificates. It was also pointed out that no lights, other than those permitted in the Motor Vehicles Rules can be fitted on the vehicle.
 
This includes spotlights, searchlights, mercury lamps and moving fancy lights. Dome lights are also not permitted, unless specifically authorised.
 
According to police sources, this year till November in all 236 drivers were booked for driving without license and fine of Rs 1,11,600 was collected while in the year 2011 in all 295 drivers were booked for driving vehicles without a valid driving license and a fine of Rs 1,55,450 were collected.
 
In the year 2012 till November, 217 drivers were booked for rash and negligent driving and fine of Rs 13,400 was collected while in the year 2011 in all 237 were booked for rash and negligent driving and Rs 1,35,800 were collected. Besides 268 drivers were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol but in 2011 only 264 drivers were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol.
 
This year till November, 7012 drivers were booked for dangerous parking and fines of Rs 7,15,000 was collected while in the year 2011 in all 6803 were booked for dangerous parking and fine of Rs 6,81,300 were collected from offenders.
 
Data available shows that Margao traffic cell which takes care of Salcete villages including Margao city in its drive against the violation of Motor Vehicles Act and rules from January to October 12, 2012 has booked 45,005 cases of traffic violations.
 
According to the information available from traffic cell fine collected during this period from defaulters is Rs 48,04,700. Police said that last year during this period in all 37,723 cases of traffic violations were booked and fine of Rs 40,11,500 was collected.
 
A senior police officer of traffic department said that in comparison to last year, this year cases booked of traffic violations increased by 19.30 per cent while fine collected has also increased by 19.77 per cent. [NT]
